Jaclyn Mednicov

Jaclyn Mednicov's intimate drawings on paper and paintings on plexiglass express the strugle of nature vs. humanity and the damage we are doing to our natural surroundings. Her borderline neo-surrealistic compositions embody imaginative recordings of absence, alluding to loss and the passage of time, making both artist and viewer necessary to complete the narrative. In her most recent body of work, she creates empty landscapes and deserted spaces that serve as witnesses to abandoned human activity, enabling the emergence of something new. The compositions simultaneously convey tenderness and transformation, vulnerability and strength, reflecting both the promise of creation and the disappointment of destruction. Mednicov captures the moment when atrophy begins or alternatively where creation starts; but one might feel her work leans to the side of optimism. She pays homage to nature with heaps of stones and crawling vines sneaking to the surface of the sidewalks, train tracks and brick walls that comprise New York City. Perhaps the cup is half full in these ambiguous but tender illustrations of humanity's ups and downs.

DANA CROSSAN'S non-representational abstractions are an emotional reflection of her everyday experiences, offering us a vast palette of color, line and erratic text. Whether stimulated by subway rides and fancy dinners, or struggling to find food at the corner bodega, Crossan creates a dialog with these experiences through her use of mixed media and formal elements of design. Her signature layering process allows the canvas to be engrossed by her swollen color fields, Cy Twombly-esque markings and ambiguous text that undulates between turbulent designs and more clear textual representation of her thoughts. Crossan's work stays true over time to her inner dialogue, allowing us to see an undisclosed fraction of our infinite responses to the complex world around us. Or perhaps this is simply a portrait of a life in Brooklyn.
