THE SHOWROOM is thrilled to present two very promising emerging artists from Brooklyn, NY whose works push the envelope and make you… wonder.

JASON BRYANT’S cropped portraits create a sense of anonymity amongst an eclectic grouping of glamorous pop figures.  He turns to Hollywood films as a visual source for his incognito subjects as well as an auditory inspiration while painting.  Bryant tries to capture a highly realistic style that evokes a film still or cropped photo, leaving the viewer searching for answers in the titles.  There is a lack in context or narrative, where expression and fashion become the only windows into discovering these dubious characters.  Yet somehow, with their eyes unavailable, they become more truthful.  We are not distracted by their emotion.  Bryant received an MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art and now works as an artist assistant to Kehinde Wiley.

RYAN SCULLY crosses over into a neo-surrealistic world where swollen, biomorphic characters swim in crashing liquids and hover in space.  He has created an abstract language where odd structures collapse onto one another, poking and reaching, while remaining erect and purposeful.  Scully’s visual sensibilities reflect his experience with the importance of water and desert landscape, the result of his growing up in the shadow of a nuclear site.  The invented trees, rocks and strange finger-like creatures all receive similar textures and shapes, creating equality in his environments.  But are these seemingly mammoth “figures” stationary, like boulders in a river, or do they walk and move and point with a purpose and destination?   This is, of course, where the viewer comes into play.  Scully received an MFA from The Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art.
