Mathieu Lévesque, Pamela Staker, Phil Wallis
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 7th 6pm-9pm (Gallery Crawl)
Press Release:
THE SHOWROOM gallery had a successful soft opening in May and is pleased to announce our Grand Opening this month at 75 Arcade in downtown Nashville. We will be featuring a group show including Pamela Staker from Chicago, Mathieu Lévesque from Montreal and Phil Wallis is with us again this month from Wisconsin.
Pamela Staker “currently explores modernist inspired subject matter with shape, color and natural forms, often incorporating blind contour charcoal studies into her paintings.” She draws on theories used by the Beatles in which they purposely left out a harmony line from their singing to give a point of inclusion for the listener. In applying this theory to her work she draws her models with out looking at the paper or canvas, allowing her brain and her hand to compete to produce a composition with inaccuracies, in turn giving the viewer an inclusion point. Her quick, painterly approach and her abstracted and fanciful narratives create beautiful and dynamic arrangements verging on neo-expressionism. Pamela Staker received her BFA in Painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has received numerous grants and awards including an Illinois Arts Council fellowship and a CAAP grant from the City of Chicago. Staker currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
Mathieu Lévesque pays tribute to pop culture and the various associations we all have with mainstream icons due to the aggressive nature of the world of media. However, by juxtaposing various fictional characters and familiar imagery, he creates an environment of “allegories and parodies replaying under their conferred new meanings.” Lévesque reminds us of media’s influence on our perception of the world, especially during our absorbent childhood years. As a result, we have all become loyal to these icons through our inevitable grip on past associations with tv programs, video games, cartoons and publicities. His loosely formalized elements and securely rendered imagery creates an aware and intelligent retrospective and a trip back to the ‘wonder years.’ Lévesque currently lives and works in Montreal, Canada.
Emerging woodworker Phil Wallis will join us again this month with his diverse collection of organic wooden finishes. Simple, rustic and elegant, Wallis' functional forms are unique creations constructed with wood from all over the world.
